Home Server, NAS and VPN Setup
A home server can be very useful when it is planned properly. Backups, media, private cloud, password managers or small services can run in one place that you control.
I help with choosing, setting up and securing the system. Starting small and stable is usually better than building something nobody wants to maintain later.
On site and remote
Many setups start with a NAS, mini PC or Raspberry Pi. Clean updates, backups, user permissions and careful external access matter more than oversized hardware.
For homes and small offices around Niederkassel, Cologne and Bonn I can review hardware, network and backup targets together.
What I can help with
- NAS and shared folders
- backup planning and restore tests
- clean Docker service setup
- VPN access from outside
- Raspberry Pi or mini server setups
How it usually works
- clarify which data and services matter
- choose hardware with realistic power use
- plan backups and access
- document the setup so it stays maintainable
Trust and transparency
I document the key accounts, services and backup paths so the setup remains understandable later.
Quick questions
Do I need expensive hardware?
Not necessarily. For many tasks, a small mini PC, a NAS or a Raspberry Pi is enough. It depends on what you want to run.
Are backups included automatically?
Backups should be planned on purpose. I do not just set them up, I also test that a restore works.
Can you set up services with Docker?
Yes. Docker is useful for many home server services when updates, volumes and backups are planned cleanly.
